About

This blog exists because of a Facebook discussion around nonfiction, particularly as it pertains to the Common Core State Standards. Most of my friends are avid readers and, whenever nonfiction comes up, I often feel like I am the lone voice, or at least the lone female voice, advocating for nonfiction.

One of my friends in the discussion said that I needed to create a starter list of nonfiction for people who already love to read. From that comment this blog was born.

When I can, I will recommend some piece of nonfiction along with commentary on why I am recommending it. If I have taught the text, I will also try to include how I approached it or links to other places that were useful. I will keep a list of these on the Faculty Lounge page.

You can also find tagged posts that deal with specific strategies, specific topics, or all of the "starter texts" by using tags.
