Reading and Listening Suggestions

What I'm Reading:

Currently, the New York Times remains a favorite. They are playing with longforms and multimedia forms, such as John Branch's gripping piece on an avalanche near a ski resort or Dan Barry's piece on Elyra.

The Atlantic is another stop for current reading. Thought-provoking. Aggravating. Button-pushing. You name it. I was angered by Andrew Simmons article on how educator's focus too much on educational advancement for poor students; no one said we had to agree with everything.

University of Pittsburgh runs a fantastic website Longform collects new and historical nonfiction.

ProPublica is a non profit investigative journalism outfit. The writing is top-notch. Off-line, I read Entertainment Weekly, Time, my local-local newspaper Crescenta Weekly and Mental Floss.

What I'm Listening To:

I'm an unabashed NPR junkie. I listen to almost anything on NPR almost all of the time, except for Prairie Home Companion which makes me want to puncture an ear drum with a chopstick. I suggest the newsier show, including both Morning and Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, Splendid and Marketplace. For Narrative Nonfiction, it's hard to beat This American Life, though Radiolab is a close, and at times, superior close-second. I think Freakonomics has extremely fun and interesting stuff.

To go with the listening, I read around NPR's website and I love their blogs, particularly the Monkey See blog, edited by the amazing Linda Holmes which has a focus on pop culture.

In terms of Podcasts, I usually catch Krista Tippet's On Being and, though I am behind, I will listen to WTF by Marc Maron.
